The First 1000
Chinese Characters
Around 90% of the characters in a modern Chinese text are in this thousand. They're ordered by frequency, so you start with the ones that earn their keep, and the list stays useful from day one to year two.
Chinese has tens of thousands of characters, but a thousand of them make up around nine in ten of what you'll read. Learn them most common first and each one pays off straight away.

Ordered by how often you'll meet them.
The most common characters are mostly the most basic, so the list works as a beginner's path and, further down, as a reference for intermediate and advanced learners.
- 1 Start from the official list The list starts from the common characters set by Taiwan's Ministry of Education (常用國字標準字體表).
- 2 Cross-reference real usage Checked against other frequency lists, usually built by analysing popular texts and online chats.
- 3 Cover the HSK Every character used in HSK levels 1 to 4 is on the list.
- 4 Check it by hand We went through the list character by character to choose the right pinyin, Zhuyin and keyword for each.
- 5 Put them in order The final 1,000 are ranked by frequency, so 的 comes first and you always learn the most useful character next.
