Empty Grid
Empty grid paper (空格, kòng gé) is Chinese character practice paper made of plain squares with no interior guide lines. Each character gets a box to fill and nothing else. The square keeps your characters uniformly sized, but where the strokes go is entirely up to you.

This is the paper you graduate to. The guide lines of the rice and field grids are training wheels: useful while you are learning where a stroke belongs, and a crutch once you know. The empty grid removes them and leaves only the thing you still genuinely need, which is a box to keep your characters the same size as each other.
It is also the right paper for writing at speed, for drilling a character you already know, and for finding out whether you actually know it. Nothing on the page is holding you up.
