Pinyin Lines

Pinyin lines (四线三格, sì xiàn sān gé), literally "four lines, three spaces", is ruled paper for practising pinyin. Four horizontal lines create three spaces: the middle space holds the body of a letter, while the top and bottom spaces give ascenders like b and d, and descenders like g and p, somewhere correct to land.

Also known as Si Xian San Ge, four-line three-space paper, pinyin ruled paper, pinyin practice lines.

About this paper

Pinyin is written with the Latin alphabet, but Latin ruled paper assumes a reader already knows where a lowercase letter sits relative to a baseline. 四线三格 teaches that directly: it is the Chinese-classroom equivalent of primary school handwriting paper, with the same four-line, three-space structure used to teach children the alphabet, applied here to pinyin syllables and their tone marks.

Tone marks sit in the top space, above the vowel they belong to, which is also where this ruling earns its keep: it gives tone marks a consistent height rather than letting them drift. Use it for drilling new pinyin, for correcting letterforms that have gone wobbly, or for any beginner material where the Latin alphabet itself still needs practice.

Questions

What is 四线三格?
Pinyin lines (四线三格, sì xiàn sān gé), "four lines, three spaces", is ruled paper for pinyin: four horizontal lines create three spaces, so letters with ascenders and descenders, and pinyin tone marks, have somewhere consistent to sit.
Is this the same as the paper used to teach English handwriting?
The structure is the same idea, four lines and three spaces, applied to pinyin rather than the English alphabet. It’s the format Chinese schools use to teach pinyin for exactly that reason.
