Field grid paper (田字格, tián zì gé) is Chinese character practice paper whose squares are divided into four quadrants by a central cross, forming a pattern that resembles the character for field, 田. The cross marks the centre of the square so you can balance a character around it.

The field grid is the paper Chinese schoolchildren actually learn on, and the one most learners settle into. Four quadrants are enough structure to keep a character centred and proportioned, stopping the left-hand component from swallowing the right or the whole thing drifting up into the top half of the box, and it does so without the visual clutter of the rice grid’s diagonals.
