Rice Grid
Rice grid paper (米字格, mǐ zì gé) is Chinese character practice paper whose squares are divided by a central cross and two diagonals, forming a pattern that resembles the character for rice, 米. The eight guide lines give you reference points for where each stroke begins, crosses and ends.

The rice grid is the most heavily guided of the Chinese practice papers, and the one to start with. A Chinese character is not a picture you copy. It is a set of strokes with a required order, angle and proportion, and the rice grid gives you a coordinate system for all three. The centre cross tells you where the middle is. The diagonals tell you where a stroke should be heading.
Beginners have no instinct yet for where a stroke should land, which is precisely the thing the eight guides supply. Once your strokes arrive roughly where you intended them to, most learners move on to the field grid, which keeps the proportions honest without holding your hand.
