Nine-Square Grid
The nine-square grid (九宫格, jiǔ gōng gé), or "nine-palace grid", is Chinese character practice paper whose squares are divided into a 3×3 grid of guide lines, nine equal cells to a square. It gives a finer reference for a character’s internal proportions than the field grid’s single cross, and is the grid calligraphers reach for when studying how a character’s components are weighted against each other.

Where the rice grid guides stroke angle and the field grid guides overall balance, the nine-square grid guides proportion between components: which third of the square a radical sits in, how much space the right-hand element is given, where the visual weight of the character actually falls. Dividing the square into nine rather than four cells gives you the resolution to see that.
It is the traditional reference grid for calligraphy practice, named for its resemblance to the nine-palace (九宫) layout, and it rewards slower, more deliberate writing than the everyday field grid. Use it when you are studying a character’s structure rather than drilling it at speed.
